10 Dogs Are Rescued From Slaughter Farm, Brought To Shelter To Start New Lives

A dog shelter in southern Florida just got ten new members — dogs, who traveled all the way from South Korea to get a second chance at life.

The ten dogs were rescued from a slaughter farm in South Korea and brought to the Humane Society of Broward County. The shelter will be their temporary home for a while, while they get assessed by veterinarians and behavioral therapists.

Cherie Wachter, who works at the Humane Society of Broward County, spoke with CBS Miami to talk about the South Korean dogs.

Apparently, the dogs were saved from a dog meat farm, where they would have been killed and eaten. "Humane Society International has been working in South Korea to try and shut down the dog meat farms there," Cherie says, "They estimate that there's between two and two and a half million dogs that are slaughtered for people to consume."

The dogs that arrived at the shelter ranged in age from 6 months to a year, and were a variety of different breeds.

Although they aren't sure exactly what breeds the dogs are, they said one looks like a Pomeranian, and others look like Mastiff mixes.

"What we're going to do," Cherie explains, "is we're going to give them time to rest, our clinic staff will start evaluating them in the next couple of days, and then we're going to have our dog trainer also evaluate each dog individually."

The work accomplished by shelters like this one is irreplaceable — many of our loving household pets wouldn't be alive if it weren't for them!
