Rosie Mota's final wish before she passed from cancer was to give her 11-year-old son Jeffrey Mota the gift of hearing. After having their first child together, Rosie and her husband Joel adopted Jeffrey from a Chinese orphanage.
Jeffrey had been abandoned at a subway station because he is deaf. Joel and Rosie always wanted to get Jeffrey a cochlear implant, but when Rosie's stage 4 breast cancer returned, the plan was put on hold.
"Our term of endearment was Boogie. So I told her, 'Boogie, it's OK, you can let go now. I love you. I'll take care of the boys,'" said Joel of his wife as she passed away.
While Joel has a good job and can support his family, the lump sum of a cochlear implant is around $20,000. After months of raising money on GoFundMe, the family's goal was reached.
Sadly, Rosie was not there to see when Jeffrey finally heard sounds for the very first time in his life. The noises that surrounded him were overwhelming, and the 11-year-old immediately began to cry. Joel cradled his dear son. Soon after, Jeffrey began to adjust and thank his family for the gift of hearing.
"He's thanked me a couple of times for his cochlear implants, which is very surprising that he's using a lot of gratitude compared to some kids who have none," Joel said of his son.
