Daughter Passes Away, But Mom Finds Letter That Says ‘Open When You Miss Me’

Cindy Mathis lost her 16-year-old daughter, Macy Mathis, in a fatal car crash. A month later, the exact comfort the mother needed seemed to miraculously appear. It was not just one, but a stack of 25 letters from Macy to Cindy.

Each letter was addressed for a special occasion. Cindy had given them to her mother for her birthday the previous year.

“Open when… you miss me,” one letter read. "Open when… you can't sleep," another said. Cindy had only read three of the letters. She had nearly forgotten about them.

“They’re so on point, and there are occasions where she knew me way too well,” Cindy told CBS News. “My daughter knew me. Most of them are definitely, definitely uplifting."

Cindy discovered one of the letters when she was cleaning out the trunk of her car.

“That’s when I had remembered she had written these letters for me,” Cindy said. “I tore my room apart looking for all of them.”

Cindy has managed to find all of the letters but one. She plans to only read them when she's feeling the various ways indicated on each envelope so that she can savor each precious note from her beloved little girl.

“I want you to know that I love you. I feel like I don’t tell you that enough. And since you can’t sleep and you’re probably stressed about something, I need you to know that I love you,” Macy wrote to her mother.

The mother has decided to share each letter as she opens them on Facebook to honor Macy's loving legacy.

“Each [letter] has helped me in so many ways,” she said. “It’s like she knew, but she didn’t know… It’s an amazing feeling. It feels like she’s there with me.”
