One day, John Drattlo was going to McDonald's for breakfast when he noticed a van parked outside. Written on the window was a heartbreaking note from a mother.
"My 15 yr old needs a kidney. Type o blood. Call or text (520)954-3350," the note read.
John asked the family permission to share and they agreed. Since then, John's Facebook post about the mom's plea has gotten shared over 20,000 times. For the family in need, it's been a godsend.
The mother turned out to be Cirila Munyon. Her teenage daughter, Robin Schrader, spends more than three hours a day, three days a week on kidney dialysis. The tedious treatment isn't very stimulating for the teen who once thought she'd be a cheerleader.
“I don't get to do much,” Robin said. “Just sitting in there is kind of boring.”
When Robin wanted to audition for the cheerleading team, she had to have a routine physical done. The tests showed she had high blood pressure. She was eventually diagnosed with MPGN, and doctors told her she needed a kidney transplant.
The news came as a shock since Robin had never felt ill. The good news is that because the condition was discovered before any symptoms, doctors are optimistic about her health.
“Right now her doctor has said she needs it ASAP, while she is still in good health,” her mom said.
Cirila was not a donor match, so she began trying to get the word out to as many people as possible. She wrote a note on her SUV and handed out flyers. However, her phone hasn't stopped ringing since John shared the image on Facebook.
“All hours of the evening and in the morning,” she said. “That's fine. I'm perfectly happy.”
While it will take time to test all of the people who are coming forward, the outlook is good, and the family is hopeful thanks to one stranger who shared their message.
