Amber Travaglio is a Cleveland, Ohio, mother dealing with tragedy. A couple of years ago, Amber's 7-year-old daughter, Melody, suffered a sudden asphyxic asthma attack.
Amber, who is a nurse, called 911 and began CPR on Melody. However, doctors were unable to save the precious child.
“I just remember flailing onto her hospital bed with her and holding her, just screaming her name,” said Amber.
The mother knew her daughter had so much more to give, so she decided to donate Melody's organs. That decision would save the life of another baby girl.
Peyton Richardson was a happy, healthy girl until a common cold began to attack her heart. She needed a new one.
“I never knew a common cold could do that,” said her mother, Ashlyn Richardson.
Peyton received Melody's heart, and Ashlyn understood the gravity of that gift.
“I just cried,” said Ashlyn. “And I kept thinking of that person that lost their child.”
Two years later, Amber met the Richardson family for the first time. The moment the two mothers met, their hearts pounded so loudly that the microphones picked up the sound. There was only tears.
Then Amber met Peyton and got to hear Melody's heart beat inside of her.
“I mean, I grew that heart inside of me,” Amber said.
The two families who had once been strangers were now forever linked. But there was more: The Richardsons gave Amber a stuffed animal lamb with the sound of Melody's — now Peyton's — heartbeat inside.
“I always say two beautiful girls, one beating heart,” Amber said.
