An uncanny series of events led to a near-death, freak accident in a Harris County, Texas, playground. While Nik Bock was playing "fishing" with a jump rope at the top of a slide, the 10-year-old became asphyxiated.
"I threw the jump rope in the air like if you were on a roller coaster, you throw your hands up," Nik said. "I was like that, then the wind caught the jump rope, made it go around my neck. And there's little holes on it with the steps, and the handle got caught in one of them, which made me get hanged."
The jump rope became a noose. Nik was hanging and quickly losing consciousness.
"I felt tingling, and then a few seconds later my eyes started to close, but then I was able to open one eye a little bit," the boy said.
But Nik wasn't alone. His friend, 9-year-old Raul Izaguirre, was feet away in the playground. Raul had to make a decision: should he go get an adult or try to save Nik himself?
He saw that Nik was choking and slipping away. Raul made the choice to save his friend.
"He went down the slide," Raul said. "That's when I saw that he was choking. And that's when I went up the ladder and pulled it out the hole."
Raul freed Nik, who came back to consciousness. Although he is in a neck brace now, he is making a full recovery. Nik's mom credits Raul for saving his life, knowing that those few seconds he acted are what saved him.
