Will Wright was on a mission and never expected to be sidetracked by an amazing discovery. He was searching for shark teeth in Havens Garden in Washington, North Carolina, when he discovered something much greater hidden by the base of a tree.
"You never know what you could find," Will explains in the video below, posted on February 24, 2017. "I knew there would probably be some sharks' teeth, which I did find one."
The 10-year-old had been scanning the ground for teeth when he spotted something shiny tucked into the base of a nearby tree.
"I thought it was a soda cap or something, but you never know. So then I just started digging," Will recalls. Out from the dirt, he pulled out a Plymouth High School 1982 class ring with the initials DMP engraved inside.
Soon, his dad called the Washington County Board of Education and was put in contact with just the person he needed to speak with.
Mary Cox listened to Will's father as he told her about the blue-stoned ring. She realized she had a yearbook from that year lying around somewhere.
Mary says, "I told them I would look through the book and see if I found anybody with those initials and I only found two people with those initials and they were twins."
With this new information, Will's family was able to search the two names and find the twins online. The ring had been missing since the 1980s and was now going to be reunited with its rightful owner. The siblings then figured out which one had actually lost the ring Will stumbled upon that day in the park.
