It all started out as a normal afternoon for a bus driver named David Doss. He was driving his students home from school when he witnessed a young boy acting weird. Then, the driver of over six years realized that something was seriously wrong.
In the video below, posted on March 20, 2017, the little boy named Zach Culbertson recalls, "I ran to him because I didn't know what to do." When Zach rushes up to David at the front of the bus, David assesses the situation.
The bus driver explains, "Yeah, he was gasping for air and holding his throat." From those gestures, David realized that Zach was indeed choking.
Then, everything happened so fast, it was almost like a blur. David thought quickly and acted just as fast in order to save the choking student. "He did the Heimlich remover," Zach tells a reporter, speaking of the Heimlich maneuver performed by the bus driver.
"Just one time, I just bumped his belly one time, then it comes flying out. Then, he took a deep, you know, breath and went back to his seat like nothing happened," David laughs, remembering how the whole ordeal had ended.
Although David doesn't believe that he's a hero, the school board definitely begs to differ. They rewarded the bus driver with a special ceremony to recognize his quick thinking and brave actions.
Zach states, "I would say that he's a life saver and I would thank him very much."
