Fred Lambert was just relaxing at his home in Mount Morris Township, Michigan, when his doorbell rang.
That doorbell ringing would forever immortalize him as a hero.
This past Saturday night on March 18, Fred got up off his couch to answer his door.
There, he found his next-door neighbor, and she was frantically asking him to call 911 because her house was on fire.
Not only that, but her cousin was still inside.
Fred quickly obliged, dialing for emergency services, but he knew that no matter how fast they were deployed, it would still take some time for their arrival. He decided to act.
Seeing smoke and flames from outside, Fred lunged inside the house. Lying on the floor was his neighbor's cousin, a 66-year-old man.
Fred didn't think or wait — he quickly dragged the man to safety.
“Smoke was coming, I was catching my breath," Lambert said. "I was looking at the kitchen because I didn't know if the stove was gas or what because the flames were getting really high, so I dragged him as far as I could.”
With the help of his neighbor, they worked together to bring him outside.
Coincidently, the very day before the incident, Fred was watching an episode of the hit show Law & Order and learned not to break a window during a house fire, as the oxygen that would flush inside would make the situation worse.
He stopped another neighbor from doing the same while he was rescuing his neighbor's cousin, who is recovering in the hospital.
