Couple Buys Shipping Container And Puts Plants Inside. Months Later, They Have A Whole Farm

Nowadays, more and more people are seeing the importance of urban farming and are making the move to start their own farms, big or small.

A common misconception is that one would need a plot of land or a large area on which to grow produce, but one Arizona couple is proving that is not the case.

Heather and Brian Szymura have started using a different way to farm: they're running their business in a repurposed shipping container. The couple grows 10 varieties of lettuce and five varieties of kale inside that one container, using technology called vertical organic hydroponics. In short, the plants are grown vertically.

The farming method is self-sustaining and can be controlled with the touch of a button. It also uses less water than one would think — about as much as one shower's worth.

The couple may be among the first to be using the technology, but they did not create the workings on the inside of the container. That technology was made by a company called Freight Farm, and is considered to be very expensive.

In the long run, farmers like Heather and Brian, who sell their produce to restaurants and businesses, may find it to be a worthwhile investment.
