Army Captain Erik Nowak had been deployed in Qatar for six months when he decided to surprise his daughter Imogen with his return.
But he almost ruined it before it even happened!
"She heard me saying I was going to board a plane. I had to make up a fib," the captain recalled in the video below.
Indeed, Captain Nowak almost let it slip during a video call with his family. Instead, he dropped a little white lie, telling his daughter that he would not be coming home.
In reality, he had worked together with Osborne Elementary School, where Imogen attended second grade, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, for a very special surprise.
In the video below, Imogen and her classmates thought they had gathered together for a presentation during Kindness Week. There, they would be hearing about the importance of care packages the students had sent to the army.
Imogen was called up to give a first-hand account of the importance of those packages, and how her own dad had reacted when he received the one she had sent him. The moment she began to speak to her fellow students in the microphone, her dad had appeared behind her with a big smirk on his face.
When Imogen was asked how her dad liked the candy she sent him, the captain sneaked up over her shoulder and replied, "I liked it a lot."
