When PJ Spraggins found out that his wife Tracy's life was on the line, he knew that he would have to do everything in his power to save her. Tracy has had lupus since she was 6 years old. The very same condition took the life of her beloved sister.
When she needed a new kidney in 2015, PJ didn't hesitate to get tested to see if he was a match. The couple thought it was good news when it turned out that he was. Then the bad news followed.
Doctors told PJ that his blood pressure was too high to undergo the surgery, meaning it would be impossible for him to save his wife. For many, that would have been the end of the conversation.
For PJ, though, it was the beginning of a new journey as a husband. PJ spent the next year getting into shape the healthy way. He completely changed his diet, began exercising regularly, and most importantly, he never gave up. PJ lost 70 pounds, and Tracy shed a few pounds with him, too.
After going from hospital to hospital and losing the weight, PJ was able to get his blood pressure low enough to undergo the surgery. Today, Tracy's kidney functions at 100 percent.
"The whole experience has been amazing," PJ said. "I mean, just the feeling you get knowing that I was able to help my wife have a better quality of life. That… that means a lot."
