On April 2, Lucy, a golden retriever, was on a hike with her owners in Malibu, California.
Like many, this couple trusted their training of their pup, so while out in nature, Lucy was exploring without a leash.
That one decision, a choice that many dog parents casually make from time to time, nearly came back to haunt Lucy's owners.
During their hike, Lucy ran off, no doubt excited to be out in the open area, and then, suddenly, the unthinkable happened: the golden retriever fell into an exposed, 30-foot-deep well.
Lucy's mom quickly called the authorities, and the Urban Search and Rescue team arrived to the scene.
They took one look down the well and found Lucy alert, but they quickly realized it was not going to be an easy save.
All in all, it took a whopping four hours before Lucy was finally removed, but first, one of the team members had to be lowered into the well after her.
“I got a yellow strap that I have, and I got it around her legs. And I was able to pick her up and put her in my arms. But I had the strap around her just in case,” said Matt Walmsley, the team member who went into the well and freed Lucy.
Luckily, the pup was unharmed and in good spirits.
The Los Angeles County Fire Department put out a statement to remind people who go hiking that their dogs should be on leashes. Good advice!
