The Vonesh family of Bailey, Colorado, went on a rafting trip in Utah that quickly turned into a nightmare. Though they were left with nothing but their prayers to hold onto, the family now credits those prayers with being their salvation.
Jay Vonesh, his wife, their two daughters, and their dog were rafting on the Escalante River when suddenly, the weather took a turn for the worse.
"Our boats got stuck on boulders. We got swept under the boulders; it was terrifying," said Jay, a youth pastor.
The family realized that they had no choice but to leave the trapped rafts and hike for help. Unfortunately, there was no help to be found. They were left alone in the wilderness with just enough food to last a day or two.
"We just kind of didn't know what we were going to do," said Julie Vonesh.
But even with this terrible predicament, there was one constant: their faith, which they turned to when all seemed lost.
"We sat on a sandbar and basically said, 'God, can you give us a hand here? We're out of options,'" Jay recalled.
