Girl Plants Tiny Cabbage Plant In The Ground. Weeks Later, It’s 15 Times The Normal Size

When Kara Hassenfratz, a third grader, brought home a tiny cabbage plant, no one believed it would grow. Her mom was persuaded that in just a few days, it would die on her windowsill. No one else in the class was having luck with their plants, including Kara's teacher.

"I tried it at my home," explains teacher Deb Darling, "and mine got eaten up by worms."

But Kara's plant was something else entirely: It didn't just grow, but totally exceeded everyone's expectations. Over the next few weeks, Kara watered it, cared for it, and planted it in her great-uncle's yard with some cow manure. It prospered. Before she knew it, the cabbage was growing well beyond the average size, until it reached a whopping 38 pounds! Kara couldn't even pick it up off the ground.

It's really something that has to be seen to be believed!

For reference, the average weight of a cabbage is about two or three pounds.

Now a fourth grader, Kara received a generous $1,000 reward for the plant by Bonnie Plants, a plant provider that works with schools across the country to teach children about gardening and raising vegetables.

The giant cabbage, when it was ready for picking, didn't go to waste. Kara's mother and grandmother transformed it into a very large and tasty meal!
