Veteran Is Denied Benefits For Decades, But Good Samaritans Have Had Enough

This is a story that's hard to hear, yet we know it happens too often. Gaylord Walter served in the Korean War, but in the 1960s his medical records were destroyed in a fire.

The VA has refused to give him his benefits for more than a decade now. To the veteran and his wife, it feels like a slap in the face from the country he loved and fought for.

“That war altered his life…he loved this country, and they do not say thank you; they deny his very existence in that country,” his wife, Nancy Walter, said.

“I couldn’t make them believe that we were in — that I was in — Korea. I was in there with my brother. I found my brother over there,” Gaylord said.

A few Good Samaritans heard of Gaylord's difficulties and decided to step in. They raised donations for the veteran to thank him for his service in person.

“It shows the community love that’s out there, that we stick together, even when the government lets us down,” Nancy said.

Gaylord's lawyers revealed that the VA has finally recognized that he served in Korea and will be retroactively paid his benefits, which could mean nearly $400,00.

The 85-year-old had so many mixed emotions he could barely speak about it.
