Son Nearly Drowns At Day Camp — Then Mom Realizes That The Adults Had No Idea What To Do

Swimming in a pool doesn't seem to be dangerous in the least, especially for those who know how to swim well. The water is still, and if the water isn't deep, there isn't much of a risk.

But Rose Bennett knows otherwise after her son Ethan nearly drowned in 2009 while at day-camp.

Ethan survived the accident but is now confined to a wheelchair. This hasn't deterred him from still going in the water and having fun, though his mom is now careful to exercise caution.

She warns others about the "silent killer": being unprepared in the event of near-drowning. In Ethan's case, she recalls that there was no adult supervision, no one was CPR trained, and there was no emergency plan.

Rose encourages others to keep in mind the ABC's of water safety that can change the outcome of any situation: A, for adult supervision. B, for barriers such a fences and gates. And C, for classes: adults and kids alike should be trained to perform CPR and good swim practices.

She reminds parents that an accident can become fatal in just a matter of seconds. Anything from distractions to inadequate training can contribute to the outcome.

Rose knows she's lucky to still have her son, but she wants other parents to help prevent deaths and injuries.
