Carl and Carolyn Colangelo were woken up one night by their dog Ginger, barking at a stranger yelling just outside their house in the middle of the night. While they would normally be annoyed by Ginger's behavior, this time around they're thankful.
The couple woke up to find their neighbor's house on fire. Their neighbor happened to be Carl's 83-year-old mother, Gertrude.
When he realized that she wasn't outside, he did what any child would do for a parent: he ran into the smoke and flames, looking for his elderly mom. His wife watched him disappear into the darkness.
Carl found his mother on the floor. He tried to stand her up but failed. There was something wrong, so he carried her out the door.
The fire had been burning for quite a while before anyone called 911, but Gertrude made it out alive, all thanks to her brave son. Her family also found out that she had suffered a stroke prior to the fire, which was why Carl had found her on the floor.
Gertrude is recovering from the ordeal. Her son credits the incredible chain of events that led up to the rescue, from his barking dog to the firefighters' arrival, for his mother's survival!
