About 20 years ago, Shontelle Howard-Moss was about to give birth to her son, Rayquan. Coincidentally, her prom night was right around the time she was expecting to meet her son for the first time. Obviously, she had to miss out on the experience. But Rayquan, now a senior at East Mecklenburg High School in Charlotte, North Carolina, decided to remedy that.
“It's always been on my heart,” Rayquan said, recalling how his mom missed her own prom while pregnant with him.
He said his mom always made sure to remind her sons that they shouldn't miss out on their own prom experiences the same way she did.
So when it was time for the prom at East Mecklenburg High School, Rayquan knew there was only one person he wanted to take as his date.
In fact, he refused to go unless Shontelle was at his side!
“I wanted to make it special. She didn't get to go to her prom, so I made it a priority to take her to my prom," he said.
Rayquan said he wanted to make sure his mom enjoyed all the special moments of prom night, including getting dressed up, dancing at the venue, and taking pictures that will undoubtedly last a lifetime.
