10 Surprising Things Celebrating 100 Year Anniversaries In 2017

It can be overwhelming to look back at all the changes we've made across the globe over the last 100 years.

Of course, despite all of those monumental advances or drastic evolutions of society as time passes, there are still plenty of things that have remained the same over the past century.

You might be surprised by how many ordinary items, places, and organizations have been around for far longer than most of us have been alive. By now, pretty much all of the things listed below have become so commonplace that we often forget that they had to get their start at some point way, way back in the day.

From sweet treats to sports leagues, there are plenty of folks celebrating the incredible milestone after maintaining their relevance for so long.

1. Girl Scout Cookies

The Girl Scouts official website states that back in 1917, a group of girls from the Mistletoe Troop in Muskogee, Oklahoma, kicked the whole thing off by baking their own cookies and selling them at their high school as a service act.

2. National Hockey League

According to the Canadian Encyclopedia, four teams, the Montreal Canadiens, Montreal Wanderers, Ottawa Senators and Quebec Bulldogs, decided to leave the National Hockey Association and form the NHL on November 26, 1917.

3. Kikkoman Soy Sauce

Three business families, the Mogi, Takanashi, and Horikiri, merged in 1917 to create the quintessential sauce, according to their official website.

 

4. Toggle Light Switch

You can find William J. Newton's original patent from November 27, 1917, in the United States Patent and Trademark Office for this evolution from the push-button indoor light switches that were previously used.

5. Clark Bar

A timeline from the NECCO candy company shows that they partnered with the D. L. Clark Company to introduce the tasty treat and ship them over to the troops fighting in World War I back in 1917.

6. Nikon

According to the timeline on their official website, three of the top optical manufacturers of Japan merged in 1917 to form a"comprehensive, fully integrated optical company," known at the time as Nippon Kogaku K.K. before adopting the Nikon name in 1946.

7. Converse All-Stars

A BBC report reveals that the classic basketball shoes were introduced in 1917, but it wasn't until a few years later that Chuck Taylor became integral in the design process.

8. Pulitzer Prize

As you can see on their official website, the award given in mega-publisher Joseph Pulitzer's name has been "honoring excellence in journalism and the arts since 1917."

9. MoonPie

According to the story on the official website for the sweet snack, it all started when one of the company's traveling salesmen heard a Kentucky coal miner ask for something "as big as the moon" which then inspired the name of the classic marshmallow sandwich.

10. Dallas Love Field

The United States Army named the airfield after Lieutenant Moss Lee Love on October 19, 1917, following his tragic passing in a flying accident over San Diego a few years prior in 1913, according to the Dallas Airport System.
