When U.S. figure skater Alysa Liu won Olympic gold, tons of people were fangirling over her. Though some Olympic athletes have faced backlash for speaking up about their political beliefs, many MAGA supporters celebrated Alysa’s win as well (even though she was previously described as “woke”). Now that she has spoken up about her political beliefs, some conservatives seem shocked and disappointed to find out that she is, indeed, “pretty liberal.” Who would’ve guessed?
During a recent interview, Alysa shared more details about her political beliefs.
The 20-year-old told Rolling Stone that her friends and family are pretty politically engaged, so she has also gotten involved in protesting and contacting policymakers. Because of their father, Alysa and her siblings are “outspoken” and really care about “basic human rights.” She told the publication that her family is “pretty liberal” overall.
“Me and my friend, when we go to protests…and my best friend, their family is also really involved with politics,” she explained. “Sometimes we’ll call, like, our policymakers. We’d write little letters. I remember when we were kids, we would do this a lot. But yeah, mostly protests, donations too, like, little stuff here and there.”
The publication asked Alysa what she’s protested and contacted policymakers about.

And Alysa’s response once again made her political beliefs pretty clear. “A lot of climate stuff, but mostly, like, election things, Black Lives Matter, Stop Asian Hate, ICE protests,” she said. “Yeah, a ton of that stuff.” It’s not the first time Alysa has spoken about her political beliefs. During an interview with KARE 11, she said “things are a little rough” in the U.S., and she thinks it’s important to acknowledge that.
“I definitely do really care about what our country is doing, and I think it is really important also to, you know, notice, like, the faults in our own government,” she said during that interview. “Yeah, very similar to my dad. Yeah, things are a little rough, a little rough in our country, but I think every government has its issues. There are so many protests that are going on, and I’ve attended.”
She added, “Coming from a family of immigrants, I think immigrants deserve rights. I think it’s a little silly, especially in America.”
Somehow, her left-wing viewpoints are news to MAGA.

When the recent Rolling Stone interview started circulating on social media, some conservatives seemed upset and…shocked? One person on X called the interview “disappointing” and said they were “really rooting for her,” only to find out it “was all for nothing.” Another person called Alysa’s political beliefs “so very sad.”
Someone else claimed that Alysa went from being “America’s sweetheart” to “flat out gross.” And sure, not every conservative had this type of reaction. But there were enough comments like these that people noticed them. “See how quickly maga turned on her,” one person pointed out. Some people found it “hilarious that MAGA tried to claim her,” with one person writing, “Love her even more!! Megas melt down starts in… 3…2…1”
However, for some, it’s really not about politics. “We knew her views..we are still glad she won gold,” one person wrote. “Go USA!”
