Apparently, even being detained by federal United States Marshals isn’t going to stop Andrew Tate from spreading his message to his millions of social media followers. Because, even though he and brother Tristan Tate were detained in Miami, Fla. and are being held behind bars, Andrew continues to share updates about his life on X (formerly Twitter).
In one X post, Andrew claims to be held in “SHU,” which typically stands for Special Housing Unit or Security Housing Unit, depending on the facility. In other words, it’s usually described as solitary confinement. But how is Andrew even posting from the facility, let alone from an area where he would have little to no contact with the outside world?

When you’re in solitary confinement, you don’t typically have access to electronic devices, social media, or really anything that involves the world outside of prison walls. In Andrew’s case, he hasn’t been convicted and he is likely to be extradited to the UK, but somehow, he is either communicating with the outside world on social media or he is convincing someone to do it for him.
In the post about being in SHU, he wrote, “I am being held in SHU, the highest level of security which exists. No commissary. No visits. No contact with the outside world. My neighbor is a cannibal who screams throughout the night.”
No contact with the outside world except,, apparently, his use of X, it seems. The following day, Andrew posted about being in SHU yet again, and detailed why he believes he does not belong there.
“Day 6 in SHU (special housing unit),” he wrote on X. “This is punitive housing for people who murder their cellmates. No commissary, no phone calls, no yard time. The worst possible conditions the US gov provides to terrorists and psychopaths. I am an innocent until proven guilty extradition detainee. I’m wanted by a foreign state. I am an American citizen. WHY AM I HERE?”

If Andrew is getting these messages out, and so frequently, then people are a little confused about how that works. In his own words, SHU is for the worst criminals. So how does he have access to technology that allows him to post on X? Or, how is he communicating with someone enough to have them post for him? It all seems a little wonky for those who already don’t believe that Andrew is innocent.
Someone commented on his initial post about SHU with, “Aren’t y you supposedly in solitary? Last I checked, posting on X is definitely NOT solitary lol.”
Another person speculated, “Listen, the Tates are choosing to be in SHU. They are way too scared to be in gen pop.”
On Reddit, someone wrote that they believe Andrew has bribed guards and that’s how he is able to get his tweets out while locked up.
“In the arrest video you can see that he manages to give his phone to one of his goons,” another user wrote. “It’s probably someone else posting from his account.”
But, someone added, “We don’t know who made the tweet. What we do know, is that neither him nor the people around him are good or honest people. So, we should read his tweets with the value they deserve.”
Celebrities are responding to Andrew Tate’s actions.
The Tates aren’t as widely known as some other social media celebrities with alleged rap sheets, but after someone shared Andrew’s post about being locked in SHU, and added that if someone needed some joy for the day, they could read it, Christina Ricci responded to it.
She wrote, “I feel better thanks!”
Well before that, though celebrities spoke out about Andrew in small doses. In 2024, Paul Mescal told The Sunday Times that the Tate brothers’ ideals are “dangerous” and that “There is a version of masculinity that is toxic and ruined the world for the longest time and will continue to do so unless it’s put in check.”
