Fried dough has been part of the culinary scene of humankind since basically forever. It has been found in prehistoric Native American settlements and was known to be consumed by the ancient Romans and Greeks. It is believed the modern doughnut was invented in the 17th and 18th centuries by Dutch immigrants in New York. These were called olie koeken which means oil cakes. Regardless of their history, one mom just thought doughnuts would be a fun treat for her son’s sleepover.
She served doughnuts for breakfast as it was a special occasion. She did not expect to receive pushback from another mom about it and was shocked. This mom has banned her son from coming over ever again to her home. The confused mom took to Reddit’s popular AITA forum to see if she was in the wrong.
Let’s set the scene.
The sleepover was a big success until the other mom expressed her outrage. “My (43F) son (10M) had a sleepover this weekend at my house with 4 other boys,” the mom explained. “They were fine and well behaved and played video games and stuff… you know kids!”
Sometimes you need a little sugar.
This mom wanted to keep the party going the next day and thought doughnuts were the perfect way to do this. “In the morning I thought I would give them a special treat since it was a sleepover and got a half dozen donuts for the boys and one for me,” she went on to say. “Quick and easy breakfast for a fun morning. I typically make things like eggs, toast, fruits/smoothies but again I thought it was a special occasion.”

Another mom objected.
Everything was going great until one of the other moms weighed in. She was upset about the doughnuts. “One of the boys told his mom i guess and I got a horrible facebook message saying I'm terrible for feeding my kids this and that I'm going to make him obese,” the host mom recalled.
The upset mom doubled down.
The disgruntled mom didn’t stop there. “I tried to explain but she just said her son wasn't going there again and blocked me. As far as I know, her son does not have any health issues in which eating a donut would be super detrimental to him,” the doughnut mom stated. She concluded by asking if she was in the wrong here.
Everyone loves a doughnut!
Reddit was overwhelmingly on this poor, confused mom’s side. Many reassured her that the other mom’s actions were a gross overreaction.
“Donuts after a sleepover sounds perfectly normal and delightful,” one user wrote. “If this kid's mom didn't want her kid to have sugary sweets, she should have let you know ahead of time. Also just wondering what she was expecting to happen food-wise at a sleepover.”
This could lead to problems down the road.
Some users pointed out they felt sorry for the angry mother’s son. He could grow up to have an unhealthy relationship with food.
One user warned: “This is a parent who will cause their kid to get an eating disorder. Their ultra restricting diet will cause the kid to binge.”
Some perspective ...
At the end of the day, the confused mom who served doughnuts should have some clarity. Her actions were perfectly normal and done with the best of intentions. If the other mom had dietary restrictions for her son, she should have communicated them clearly beforehand.
One user suggested a petty response to the situation. “Send a box of donuts to the mom as an apology,” they advised. This is funny, but probably a suggestion to ignore: It would be a waste of doughnuts.
