What to Know
A Michigan bakery took to social media to clarify that they are, indeed, OK after a “horrifying” lamb-shaped cake that looked like “roadkill” went viral on social media. Presumably, given that the bakery posted the disturbing cake on April 1, some people recognized it as a joke. But some April Fool’s Day jokes are more convincing than others, and other than the kind of terrifying photo of the unconventional cake, nothing seemed particularly unusual about the bakery’s Instagram post.
Homestead Kitchen Artisan Cakery actually sounded 100% serious. They captioned the photo with, “Order your lamb cake for Easter! Today is the last day to place orders. Choose from chocolate, vanilla, wedding almond, or lemon. Order link in bio! Pick up available Friday 10am-6pm and Saturday 9am-3pm.”
People reacted to the creepy cake in the comments.
“This looks like an ashtray I made my dad in the third grade,” one person commented. Someone else said, “It’s the teeth and the eyeball pointing in different directions for me🤣Other than that, it’s horrible.”
“That little lamb has been through some things,” a third account joked. While most people agreed that the cake looked “weird” and disturbing, a lot of them joined in on the joke and said they would happily order several of them. “Finally! A cake I can buy where I can trick my family into believing I made it 🙊😂” a fourth person joked.
The lamb cake got so much attention that the bakery addressed it in a follow-up post.
Although a lot of the people who commented on the original post seemed to understand that it was a joke, the bakery apparently “received calls and messages of concern” from people who saw the cake online.
“I feel the need to clear the air,” the bakery posted. “Yesterday we shared a lighthearted post that may have caused some commotion in our community. As a result, we’ve received calls and messages of concern.”
The bakery went on to explain that the cake was, indeed, an April Fool’s Day joke, just in case that wasn’t clear. They also went on to clarify that the post was not meant to be “an attack on Christianity.”
“While the lamb CAKE is a longstanding Easter tradition here in the States and is not a biblical representation of Jesus Christ, I can see why some might confuse this cake post with an attack on Christianity,” they wrote. “As a Bible believing follower of Christ, I pray that my whimsy does not stand in your way of experiencing the life changing power of the cross this week. Read: the post was never about Jesus.”
Though the bakery did not actually make the creepy lamb cake, they later decided to do so.
It turns out that even though the cake sparked concerns, some people loved it, found it hilarious, and truly wanted to order one like it. The original image was AI-generated, but people enjoyed it so much that the bakery later made some just like it.
“The creepy lamb is not our work, but we will be creating some thanks to a handful of customers with a great sense of humor,” they wrote. And for those who were worried about what was going on, they also added, “Yes, we are ok. Actually, we are great! Thank you to all who asked and were concerned for us. We are elated that our post brought a much needed collective chuckle for so many people, considering how tough things have been in our world lately.”
Surely, when the bakery posted the scary-looking lamb cake, they were not expecting it to go viral or attract new customers. But by the looks of it, the cake turned out to be quite popular. In another post, Homestead Kitchen Artisan Cakery shared its own version of the strange-looking lamb cake, writing, “We can’t thank you all enough for how this week unfolded. Y’all are weird and we love it! God bless you for the blessings you’ve been to us. 💙💙💙💙”
