Billy Ray Cyrus is clearly not on good terms with his son Trace. Shortly after Billy Ray’s messy Donald Trump inauguration performance, Trace took to social media to urge the country star to get help. At the time, Trace said he used to think Billy Ray was “the coolest person ever.”
But now, Trace sees his father as “the lamest man to ever walk planet earth.” On June 10, 2025, Trace, who was adopted by Billy Ray in 1993, took to Instagram to slam the Hannah Montana actor for skipping his mother-in-law’s funeral several years ago. In 2020, Tish Cyrus’ mother died. At the time, Tish and Billy Ray were still married. However, attending the funeral was not among Billy Ray’s priorities, according to Trace.
“This man is so hungry for fame it’s pathetic,” Trace wrote below a photo of his father. “He really flew to Italy for a fashion show but wouldn’t come to LA for Mammie’s funeral while he was still married to my mom.”
Relatives tried to make the trip easy for Billy Ray, Trace explained in his post. But still, the country singer didn’t attend. “Even after his daughter got him a 60k private jet like he demanded then he still didn’t come even after the plane was paid for,” Trace claimed.
Though Trace once looked up to his father, he now sees Billy Ray as an example of how not to act. “You’re the lamest man to ever walk planet earth,” Trace continued. “Honestly embarrassed to ever have considered you my idol.”
Describing his dad as “washed up, delusional, [and] evil,” Trace vowed not to be like his father when he’s older.
It’s not the first time Trace has publicly called his dad out on social media. Last time, the tone was a bit more positive and encouraging though. In January, Trace wrote that he and his siblings were “genuinely worried” about their dad.
“We are all hanging on to memories of the man we once knew & hoping for the day he returns,” he wrote at the time. “You’re not healthy Dad & everyone is noticing it.” He clarified that the message was coming “from a place of love and also fear that the world may lose you far too soon.”
In the January post, Trace suggested that he and his father had a somewhat strained relationship.
“We haven’t talked in a while but I’m over a year and half clean from alcohol,” he continued. “Guess what? I feel amazing.. I don’t know what you’re struggling with exactly but I think I have a pretty good idea & I’d love to help you if you would open up and receive the help.”
