What to Know
The Trump administration is cracking down on immigration in Charlotte, North Carolina and taking inspiration from a beloved children’s book — in a way that the book’s author would not approve of.
On November 15, the Department of Homeland Security announced that it was launching “Operation Charlotte’s Web,” but the granddaughter of E.B. White, the author who wrote “Charlotte’s Web,” wants to make one thing very clear: her grandfather wouldn’t have supported this.
The children’s book focuses on the friendship between a spider named Charlotte and a pig named Wilbur.
In the story, Charlotte uses her web to protect Wilbur from being slaughtered. According to the author’s granddaughter, Martha White, “Operation Charlotte’s Web” is not in line with the book’s message or her grandfather’s beliefs.
In a statement, she said, “He believed in the rule of law and due process. He certainly didn’t believe in masked men, in unmarked cars, raiding people’s homes and workplaces without IDs or summons,” per Politico.
She also made it clear that her grandfather “didn’t condone fearmongering,” CNN reported. Border Patrol Commander Greg Bovino boasted that 81 people were arrested in the Charlotte area on November 15.
According to him, all of these arrested occurred in just five hours.
“81, many of whom had significant criminal and immigration history, are off the streets,” Bovino wrote on X. “This was done in about 5 hours! Stay tuned to social media to take a look at who we apprehended. More to come.”
According to a press release, the DHS claims that “Operation Charlotte’s Web” is meant to target people who “knew sanctuary politicians would protect them and allow them to roam free on American streets.”
DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin said, “Americans should be able to live without fear of violent criminal illegal aliens hurting them, their families, or their neighbors. We are surging DHS law enforcement to Charlotte to ensure Americans are safe and public safety threats are removed. There have been too many victims of criminal illegal aliens.”
