A-list celebrities from all over the world gathered in Venice for the lavish wedding of Amazon cofounder Jeff Bezos and former journalist Lauren Sánchez. Among those celebrities was “climate activist” Leonardo DiCaprio, who got a lot of criticism for his attendance.
The Academy Award winner has spent decades working on environmental causes, even creating the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation, which focuses on wildlands conservation, oceans conservation, climate change, indigenous rights, transforming California, and innovative solutions. DiCaprio has also produced documentaries about the climate crisis.
During his acceptance speech for his Academy Award for best actor for his role in The Revenant, DiCaprio said, “Climate change is real, it is happening right now. It is the most urgent threat facing our entire species and we need to work collectively together and stop procrastinating.”
For someone who cares so much about the environment, attending the Bezos-Sánchez wedding seems to be counter to everything DiCaprio stands for. Yet there he was, in Venice, attending the billionaire’s bash.
Critics didn’t hesitate to slam DiCaprio for his hypocritical actions.

Ahead of the wedding, protesters took to the streets of Venice, telling Bezos he wasn’t welcome in their city. Venice suffers from over-tourism and climate-induced flooding, which protesters made sure to point out. One protester’s poster said, “The planet is burning, but don’t worry, here’s the list of the 27 dresses of Lauren Sanchez.”
For someone who claims to care so much about the environment, it seems like DiCaprio should have been with the protesters, not on the guest list.

Many commenters pointed out that DiCaprio hid his face from paparazzi throughout the festivities. “He was embarrassed being photographed there!” one person wrote on Instagram.
Another critic commented: “He’s going to have to wear that cap for the rest of his life to hide the shame of what he’s doing today. Imagine being on so many boards for climate change and other things and appearing at a fascist wedding of the two people that are systematically contributing to destroying our democracy.”
Leonardo DiCaprio is not a face for slowing down climate change. His use of private jets tells us he doesn’t care.

To many people it was a disappointment, but not a surprise that DiCaprio attended the wedding. He is, after all, a celebrity. Although he does a lot of good for the environment, it seems that he doesn’t always bring that same energy when it comes to his personal life.
