President Donald Trump has left people feeling confused on many occasions, but when it comes to statements that make no sense, his response to a question about the bond market might take the cake. On Friday, August 21, a reporter asked Trump about the Treasury Department’s recent efforts to calm the bond market. Trump suggested that military intervention is an option, which confused tons of people online and increased suspicions that he doesn’t actually understand economic policies.
People weren’t even sure what Trump was talking about.

On some level, it sounded like he wasn’t actually answering the question the reporter asked him and was instead responding to something else entirely. However, another possibility is that he just didn’t know what the reporter was talking about or how to answer the question.
A reporter asked Trump if he told Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent to intervene in the bond market. Trump made it clear that the intervention was not his idea. “No, not at all,” he responded. “He’s a very capable man. He wanted to do it. He’s very good at it. He did that, yeah.”
The reporter still had more questions after that. She pointed out that “yields have come back up since then,” and asked, “Have you talked to him about another type of intervention? Is that something he will be doing?”
That’s when Trump mentioned the military, for some reason. “We have many types of intervention,” he answered. “That’s one. The ultimate intervention is our military. And if we have to use that, we will.”
People had lots of questions, like, “What does that even mean?”

Often, when Trump says something nonsensical, people on social media think of lots of witty responses. There are also usually a decent number of people who try to make sense of what he meant. While there was some of that this time around, people were largely just baffled to the point that they were nearly speechless.
After hearing Trump’s response, people on X wished that the reporter had asked more follow-up questions, such as, “What do you think the bond market is?”
“Tell me you have know idea what the question means without telling me,” one person wrote. “honestly i need to know who he thinks the bond market is,” someone else commented.
And if Trump truly didn’t understand the question, people also wondered why he answered with so much confidence. “What did he think the question was?” another critic questioned.
The fact that Trump attended the Wharton School of Business and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Economics makes his answer even more confusing. Of course, people have raised questions about Trump’s performance in school, but it still seems like someone with a degree in economics would know what the bond market is.
“Seriously, what did he learn at Wharton?” a fourth critic asked.
Some critics suspect cognitive decline.

Perhaps Trump did previously have a better understanding of economic policies, some commenters suggested. However, he’s now 80 years old. To some of the critics on social media, his response to this question seemed like evidence that he’s “getting worse.”
“Trump is painfully & dangerously stupid,” one critic argued. “His cognitive decline does irreparable harm to our country.”
Others questioned how he’s “in charge of anything.” “What is he saying, can someone translate please?” another person commented. While the statement was especially perplexing, a lot of critics still saw it as part of a pattern. “Why doesn’t he ever make sense?” someone else wrote.
