Donald Trump Jr. says there’s a “calling” for him to follow in his father’s footsteps and run for president.
Weeks after Trump 2028 baseball caps went on sale on the Trump Organization’s website, the president’s eldest son said he won’t be that Trump, but throwing his hat in the ring at some point isn’t out of the question.
“You never know,” Trump Jr. told attendees at the Qatar Economic Forum.
There was a scattering of applause when Bloomberg TV moderator Joumanna Bercetche posed the question to the 47-year-old political scion. Trump Jr. welcomed the reaction and joked those cheers were probably coming from people in the audience he’d invited.
“The answer is I don’t know, maybe one day,” Trump Jr. said. “That calling is there.”
He boasted that the MAGA movement — led by his father — had wrestled power away from “milquetoast” Republicans, which opened the door for populist candidates to defeat traditional conservatives.
Trump Jr. then perpetuated his father’s false claim that he, not former President Joe Biden, won the 2020 presidential election.
“I think everyone probably believes he actually won at this point anyway,” he claimed, to the chagrin of his host.
“Ugh … that’s for another discussion,” Bercetche interjected.
“That’s another session,” Trump Jr., who serves as the Trump Organization’s executive vice president, conceded.
He clarified on social media May 21 that if he does run, it won’t be in 2028 when his father’s second term ends.
“I’ve always said, while I’ll never 100% rule it out down the line, I have ZERO interest in running for office in ’28 or anytime soon,” he clarified.
While Trump Jr. has never run for elected office, he’s spent considerable time on the campaign trail and in front of TV cameras championing his father’s political endeavors. He teased the idea of running for mayor of New York City in 2016 during an interview with CNN, which his own father conceded was an unlikely pursuit.
“He couldn’t win as a Republican, he wouldn’t have a chance,” Trump told Fox Business in a 2020 interview.
