Why The Heck Did A United Plane’s Emergency Slide Land In A Chicago Man’s Backyard?

It’s a common practice to text a friend after arriving home safely. One has a false sense of security when behind four walls at home. Sometimes, bad or bizarre things can occur even then. Patrick Devitt, a Chicago homeowner, experienced the latter when an emergency slide from a United Airlines plane hit his roof and landed in the backyard.

Thankfully, no one was hurt. There was property damage impacting the roof, downspout and a window screen. It could have been so much worse.

Patrick spoke to WLS-TV about the experience and said it all began with a big boom as the slide hit his home. His father-in-law and son were home to hear it at around noon on Monday July 17, 2023. It was a big boom because it is a big slide.

“When it’s all stretched out, it’s larger than a small car,” Patrick explained. “It’s a very, very big piece of equipment.” He is still in shock this incident even occurred in the first place.

“I’m stunned a little bit. I’m just glad that everybody is safe and OK,” he went on to say. “Just, just seeing that in my backyard, like wow. This really happened. It fell off of an airplane and landed in our backyard.”

The missing slide was discovered by maintenance workers after the plane landed at O’Hare International Airport from Switzerland. Both the Federal Aviation Administration and United Airlines are investigating this situation.
