Lara and her two siblings were three Black children who had spent their childhood in foster care. Their mother had addiction issues and their father was out of the picture. The kids spent years in the system, making their way through various foster homes.
Even though there was so much heartache in this entire process, Lara never lost hope. She would consistently tell herself and her two younger brothers that they would eventually find the people and home they were destined to have.
For her two little brothers, Lara was a bright light who helped take away their pain and anxiety from living a life that was so unstable. Every day, Lara would feed and bathe her younger brothers without ever being asked.
When Lara was 7 years old, she and her brothers were adopted by a loving woman named Victoria. Victoria was a single white woman in her early 40s who had made a successful life for herself as a lawyer.
There was a transition period for Victoria and her three newly adopted children, but they soon found themselves sharing an unbreakable bond. The only thing that young Lara found was that since they had moved around so much, all of her brothers’ favorite toys were no longer in their possession.
