Life was difficult for little baby Gabe right from the get-go. He was born in Brazil and when he was only 2 days old, his biological mother left him at the hospital after she gave birth.
When his birth mother saw Gabe, she found herself desperately disappointed and unable to face the thought of continuing to be his caretaker.
Gabe was born with a condition called Hanhart syndrome, which is often characterized by underdeveloped limbs, mouth, and jaw. Due to this rare birth defect, Gabe was born without any arms or legs.
Little Gabe’s future appeared to be quite bleak. Living with this kind of condition after his mother abandoned him at the hospital, it seemed that he was likely destined to live a quiet life laying in a hospital bed.
One day, while in a grocery store, a woman named Janelle Adams saw young Gabe’s photo up on the wall and from that moment, she couldn’t get him out of her mind.
According to People, Janelle said that even though she knew there would be some challenges along the way, it simply “felt right,” and she knew that bringing Gabe to Utah to be with her husband, Ron, and 13 other children, was “just something [they] were supposed to do.”

Janelle and her husband went through the adoption process and paperwork, and soon enough, Gabe was legally a part of the Adams family.
Once Gabe was in their care, he began to fully thrive. Janelle and her husband got him a wheelchair as they wanted Gabe to grow up to be as independent as possible. By the time he was 12 years old, he could dress himself, walk, swim, and eat on his own.
