Sophie found herself growing more and more worried as she had been awake for some time but her mother Hannah was still asleep in her bedroom. The 4-year-old crept into her mom’s room to check on her and when she didn’t even stir, she knew in her heart that something was wrong.
Their mornings together never started like this. Hannah was always the first one up and she’d be out in the kitchen making breakfast for Sophie before she even raised her head off her pillow. Then, after a little time together, Hannah would drop Sophie off at day care and head to work, but this day was different.
Sophie decided that she needed to call the one phone number that her mom had made her memorize as a small child in case there was ever an emergency. When she called 911 and the operator heard a child’s voice on the line, they immediately sent out the police and an ambulance to Hannah and Sophie’s residence.
When emergency services arrived at their home, they found it a bit tricky to get into their home. The EMTs called out to Sophie from outside their door and asked her to let them in, but she discovered that she was too little to reach the doorknob.
She looked around for something to climb up on that would make her taller to properly reach the doorknob. She tried to push a dining room chair toward the door with all her strength, but it was far too heavy. Before she knew it, the chair she had been trying to push ended up falling over on her and trapping her beneath it.

Sophie called out to the emergency workers who were still stuck in the hallway. They told her to hold on and to cover her head and ears. Before she knew it, she heard three loud thuds as they failed to break the door down.
