An exit from the harsh politics game of Washington, D.C. might come with some freedom in saying what you want without worry over how it is perceived. That seems to be the case for Hillary Clinton. She admitted months after a video from the Obama Presidential Center opening went viral, what she and Barack Obama discussed, to be caught giggling together at the event.
In an interview on the Pivot with Kara Swisher and Scott Galloway podcast, Clinton opened up about the viral photo and video of her and Obama laughing together while his wife, Michelle Obama, delivered a speech at the event. At the time of the original footage in June 2026, people thought they knew the context of the joke between the two. Now, she confirmed what some already guessed.
Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama were seen laughing together at the opening of the Obama Presidential Center.

Bill and Hillary Clinton attended the opening of the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago in June 2026. Clips from the event went viral online, including footage of Michelle praising her husband and his work as the president twice. But a shot of Hillary and Barack is what people began to talk about on social media, as they noticed the pair sharing what appeared to be an inside joke and a few laughs.
It was during a point in Michelle’s speech where she spoke of Barack’s accomplishments, including the Nobel Peace prize. Donald Trump tried and failed to be awarded the coveted prize in 2025. And, as of 2026, he still does not have one, which is where Michelle’s cheeky comment about her husband earning one likely came from.
It also prompted Hillary and Barack to share a laugh from where they sat, watching Michelle on-stage. The moment between a two-time president and a candidate who lost the 2016 election to Trump, but became the first female to run for president and make it past the primaries.
Hillary Clinton later revealed what they were laughing about and what she whispered to him.
@good.politics Hillary Clinton reveals the story behind that viral photo with Obama: "Michelle Obama was giving this incredibly clever speech touting all of Barack's many accomplishments. And then she got to, and of course you received a Nobel Peace Prize. And I burst into laughter. He started to giggle. I said, oh my God, I am sure Trump is watching this. He thinks he's now in the third circle of hell. And he goes, yeah, I hope he is." — Hillary Clinton, fmr. During Hillary’s interview with Pivot with Kara Swisher and Scott Galloway, she opened up about the moment she had with Barack and how Trump was the butt of the joke for them. I mean, that makes total sense, given Trump’s very different moves in the White House during his second term than what Barack did during his own second term.
“I was sitting behind him at the opening of their, you know, very impressive Obama Presidential Center in Chicago,” Hillary explained. “And we were sitting there. I was sitting behind him and Michelle Obama was giving this incredibly clever speech touting all of Barack’s many accomplishments. And then, you know, she got to, ‘and of course, you received a Nobel Peace Prize.’ And I burst into laughter. He started to giggle. I poked him in the back. And I said, ‘oh, my God, I am sure Trump is watching this. He thinks he’s now in the third circle of Hell.’ I mean, the way that she just tweaked him about the Nobel Peace Prize. And he goes, ‘yeah, I hope he is.'”
Some have questioned how close the Obamas and Clintons actually are.

Despite the viral photo of Hillary and Barack laughing together, and their shared history with Trump, there are theories from people who are certain the Clintons and Obamas do not get along as much as they appear to publicly. In a Reddit thread about Bill once referring to Rev. Jesse Jackson’s accomplishments in South Carolina compared to Barack’s, with both of them being Black men, some users questioned the backhanded compliment.
They commented on the post to suggest that Bill meant it as a slight. Others wondered if the Obama and the Clintons are actually friends. But, it seems, it is a lot easier for former presidents, who no longer have an interest in running for office, to connect with each other on a friendship level.
