On June 14, Vice President JD Vance and his wife, Second Lady Usha Vance, celebrated their wedding anniversary. JD took to social media in honor of the occasion, and the post is raising eyebrows because of one interesting word he used.
“Happy Anniversary to our lovely Second Lady,” he wrote on X. “12 years and almost 4 kids later, and we’re still going strong. Love you Usha!” On the surface, there’s nothing especially unusual about this. But lots of people online immediately latched onto his use of the word “almost” and related it to his stance on reproductive rights.
JD has historically been anti-abortion.
For pro lifers, last night was a gut punch. No sugar coating it.

Giving up on the unborn is not an option. It's politically dumb and morally repugnant. Instead, we need to understand why we lost this battle so we can win the war.
I was very involved in the "no" campaign for…
A previous post suggests that he would prefer to identify as “pro-life” rather than anti-abortion, though he has generally advocated against reproductive rights. In a lengthy social media post in 2023, he wrote, “Having an unplanned pregnancy is scary. Best case, you’re looking at social scorn and thousands of dollars of unexpected medical bills. We need people to see us as the pro-life party, not just the anti-abortion party.”
He also added, “As Donald Trump has said, ‘you’ve got to have the exceptions.’ I am as pro life as anyone, and I want to save as many babies as possible. This is not about moral legitimacy but political reality.”
Previously, he called himself “100% pro-life,” per NBC News.
But now people are making jokes about how his anniversary post sounds weirdly pro-choice.

Clearly, when JD wrote that he and his wife “almost” have four kids, he was referring to the fact that they’re currently expecting their fourth. But some critics found his phrasing very interesting, and tons of jokes about it ensued.
“‘almost four’ sure sounds like he doesn’t consider the fetus she’s pregnant with to be a real person yet,” one person on X wrote. “weird.”
Someone else jokingly captioned JD’s anniversary post with, “jd vance comes out as pro-choice and says that a fetus is not a kid.” And another person captioned it with, “JD Vance acknowledges life begins at birth in new anniversary post.”
One popular post on the topic read, “not jd vance admitting fetuses aren’t full humans 👀” And because of his use of this phrasing, people also had questions for him: “So at what point does that fetus qualify as Kid Number 4, JD?”
Obviously, not everyone agreed with this interpretation.
So you agree a fetus in the womb isn’t an actual child https://t.co/ijHcG487hc

In response to these jokes, some people who disagreed left comments like, “Where does he say it isn’t fully human?” and “The fetus is not a kid yet, but still a full human.” They also argued that those who made those jokes clearly knew what JD was trying to say.
At the same time, some people truly did not seem to understand what JD was trying to say. Perhaps some of them missed the Vances’ pregnancy announcement, or they were just generally confused by the whole “almost four kids” thing.
“What does ‘almost’ 4 kids later mean?” one person questioned. “Happy anniversary to you both, but what the hell is almost four kids?” another commenter wrote.
