What to Know
At this point, people are questioning who writes Vice President JD Vance’s speeches. Somehow, he’s been churning out sound bites that critics think would make great content for Democrats’ campaigns, which is probably … not what he was going for. And yet …
He previously said, “The reason why gas prices are where they are today is because of Donald Trump’s work,” and critics of the Trump administration were like, “Well … yes.” Then, he warned people about fraud in the federal government, and tons of critics pointed out that he is part of the government. And now, he’s urging people to “vote against the crazy leadership in Washington DC.” You can’t make this stuff up.
A clip from his speech is getting a lot of attention on social media at the moment.

During a May 18 visit to Milbank Manufacturing in Kansas City, Missouri, Vance said, “If you want to rebuild the American dream for the next generation, vote against the crazy leadership in Washington DC.” Which definitely seems like an odd thing to say when, from a lot of people’s perspective, he is “the crazy leadership in Washington DC.” It prompted tons of comments from people who were questioning why he would talk about his own boss, President Donald Trump, like that.
It’s not the first time that Trump administration officials have warned people about the government while seemingly forgetting that they’re part of it. One critic labeled this particular clip with, “When you ARE ‘the government’ now but you still think you’re the opposition party….”
When Vance told people to vote against “crazy leadership,” critics said they certainly will.
Ok, JD Vance. We will do as you suggest. https://t.co/9UTLnokRQX

“Does he realize who the crazy leadership is?” one person questioned. And others argued that they’ve already tried to vote against and advocate against “crazy leadership.” Another critic wrote, “We tried couch f—er. And yet — here you are.”
The comments also make it very clear that this is not the first time that Vance has inadvertently insulted his own boss (and himself). “Is he talking about himself again?” someone else commented.
Of course, the clip people were reacting to was only a short snippet from his speech. It would be safe to assume that this particular comment was taken out of context, but still, the fact that he included it at all was questionable to people. Because this exact same situation—where he accidentally creates the perfect soundbite for those who oppose the Trump administration—keeps happening to him. “Is he campaigning for the Democrats?” a commenter questioned. Though it was obviously not his intention, someone else said Vance created a “banger ad for Dems.”
Vance was actually talking about Democratic congressional leadership.
Hey JD, you are the crazy leadership in Washington DC https://t.co/fSu9Gc7sZY

Snopes fact-checked the claim that Vance said, “If you want to rebuild the American dream for the next generation, vote against the crazy leadership in Washington DC.” And, yes, he really did say it. But he was not talking about himself or his boss. It still seems like a rather unfortunate thing to say, though, given how easy it’s been for critics online to use these exact words against him.
“Yes, vote against the crazy leadership,” another critic responded. “Who wrote this speech?”
