On several occasions, Vice President JD Vance has lectured people about how they should be more appreciative and grateful. Now, he’s back at it.
Back in 2025, he slammed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky for not acting grateful enough, which critics found super offensive and condescending. Later that year, when he complained about how former MSNBC host Joy Reid should show more “gratitude,” people started to think this was his thing. And based on his recent comments about Democrats, it really seems to be.
According to Vance, the problem with Democrats is their lack of gratitude.
Vance: It doesn’t both me that Democrats disagree with our policies. It bothers me that they are just terrible people, so many of them. But what really does bother me is that they don't show gratitude for the United States. If you don't feel grateful to live here, what are you… pic.twitter.com/vYDFHx9cl6

Shocker. During a recent Fox News appearance, Vance spoke about his problem with Democrats, and it was the same problem he seems to have with a lot of people, for some reason. “It doesn’t bother me when Congressional Democrats disagree with our policies,” Vance said. “It bothers me that they’re just terrible people, so many of them.”
He continued, “But what really does bother me is that they don’t show gratitude for the United States of America.” Ah, there it is.
“Disagree with our policies, but if you don’t feel grateful to live here and for the people who made it possible, then what are you even doing being in public service?” he added. “Too many Democrats don’t show appreciation for the country.”
People on social media had a lot to say about this.
No one has ever demanded more gratitude but done less to deserve it than JD Vance https://t.co/9xkpQxyx4j

Pod Save America host Jon Favreau reacted to Vance’s comments with, “No one has ever demanded more gratitude but done less to deserve it than JD Vance.”
A lot of critics find Vance’s apparent “obsession” with gratitude concerning. “What’s w/this guy &his need for an outward display of gratitude?” someone commented. “The insecurity of this administration & their demand for untethered displays of loyal worship is frightening.”
And someone else said, “He has this obsession. It bothers me that JD Vance is so divisive. No Democrat would demand blind one-sided loyalty & obsequious gratitude from constituents.”
And it’s, of course, reminiscent of some of his previous comments.
He has this obsession.

Like when he told Zelensky that he also should be more grateful for the United States. “Have you said thank you once?” he said to the Ukrainian president. Zelensky reminded him that he actually has expressed gratitude many times, but Vance focused on how he didn’t say “thank you” during their meeting.
“No, in this entire meeting, have you said thank you?” Vance said. “Offer some words of appreciation for the U.S.A. and the president who’s trying to save your country.”
At the time, people felt like Vance was “lecturing” Zelensky, and they felt the same way when he complained about Democrats.
Then, in response to a clip of Joy Reid talking about her mother’s experience coming to the U.S. from Guyana, Vance offered her some condescending advice that she never asked for.
“Joy Reid has had such a good life in this country,” he wrote. “It’s been overwhelmingly kind and gracious to her. She is far wealthier than most. Yet she oozes with contempt. My honest, non-trolling advice to Joy Reid is that you’d be a much happier person if you showed a little gratitude.”
