Amid persistent rumors about his relationship with Erika Kirk, Vice President JD Vance spoke out against the conspiracy theorists who have been targeting her in the aftermath of Charlie Kirk’s death. Erika has described both JD and his wife, Usha Vance, as extremely kind and supportive people who have been there for her as she grieves.
While speaking on The Clay Travis & Buck Sexton Show, JD said that the people pointing fingers at Erika and perpetuating rumors and conspiracy theories about her have “enraged” him.
On some level, JD can understand the people who are “going down a rabbit hole.”

He said that he can understand people looking for answers and questioning “the official narrative.” Perhaps that’s because he allegedly did the same thing. In the book Regime Change, New York Times journalists Jonathan Swan and Maggie Haberman alleged that JD obsessed over the “most negative possibilities” after Charlie’s death and felt there could be “a larger plot behind the murder.”
The authors claimed that JD “went down countless online rabbit holes, becoming so consumed by the videos and the theories that his wife, Usha, told him she was worried about him.”
However, he seems to draw the line at questioning Erika.

It’s unclear which theories JD obsessed over, but they were clearly not the ones involving Erika (unless he was obsessing over them simply because he was “enraged” by them). He told Clay and Buck that Erika is a “good person” who is obviously mourning the loss of her husband. He doesn’t think she’s deserving of the criticism or suspicion she’s been subjected to online.
“The idea that Erika has suffered not just the loss of Charlie, but all this B.S. that’s directed at her, that’s very frustrating to me,” JD said.
He added, “I know Erika. She’s a very, very good person, and she’s trying to raise two kids who just lost their father, and she just doesn’t deserve the attacks that have been leveled against her.”
JD obviously has a good relationship with Erika. Erika has described JD and Usha as “incredible.” She’s also said, “No one will ever replace my husband. But I do see some similarities of my husband in JD—in Vice President JD Vance.” And because of their apparent closeness, JD and Erika still can’t escape the relationship rumors sparked by the awkwardly intimate hug they shared on stage in 2025.
JD also defended other people who work for Turning Point USA.
It’s not just the theories about Erika that bother JD, though those ones have clearly gotten to him.
“I’m most frustrated at the attacks on Erika and some of the other staff,” he said. “You know, Mikey (McCoy), who was Charlie’s chief of staff and a very good friend of both of ours. You know, Mikey was the person who called me and told me that he thought Charlie actually had a chance when he was in the hospital.”
He then added, “You know, of course, that didn’t work out. But the idea that somehow these people were involved in Charlie’s death just enrages me.”
