What to Know
Political analyst Chuck Todd thinks that Vice President JD Vance’s role in the Trump administration has effectively ruined his chances of ever becoming president. Is that a hot take? Apparently. While many would argue that there’s really no coming back from defending President Donald Trump’s actions, there are people who think Vance still has a chance. However, Todd thinks “JD Vance’s presidential aspirations are dead.” The prediction sparked a pretty intense debate online, with some arguing that people will still support Vance if he conforms to Trump’s agenda, and others—including those who voted for Trump—saying they would definitely not support him.
Todd thinks it’s Trump’s military operations in Iran that have ruined things for Vance.
Trump’s controversial war with Iran is particularly complicated for Vance, who previously portrayed himself as an anti-interventionist. When Vance endorsed Trump in an op-ed in 2023, he wrote, “He has my support in 2024 because I know he won’t recklessly send Americans to fight overseas.” The op-ed was even titled, “Trump’s Best Foreign Policy? Not Starting Any Wars.” Yikes.
Additionally, during the 2024 presidential campaign, he explicitly said he did not want to go to war with Iran. “America doesn’t have to constantly police every region of the world,” Vance said on Tim Dillon’s podcast. “Our interest, I think very much, is in not going to war with Iran. It would be a huge distraction of resources. It would be massively expensive to our country.”
But now, he’s in a position where he has to defend the war he clearly did not support before. But Vance has defended it by claiming that Trump has “a clear objective.” He told Fox News‘ Jesse Watters, “There’s just no way that Donald Trump is going to allow this country to get into a multi-year conflict with no clear end in sight and no clear objective.”
So, Todd believes it’s over for him.

Todd explained his theory during a conversation with former CNN commentator Chris Cillizza. “There is no recovering from this, because you’re the vice president!” Todd asserted. “It’s what happens. It’s like what happened to Kamala Harris. Whatever identity JD Vance had going that was different from Donald Trump’s is gone. And now you own everything he does.”
Todd also noted that “it’s clear [Vance is] a little uncomfortable with this.”
But on social media, reactions to this “hot take” were very mixed. One person on X argued that Vance could still run for president and win because he “can run on Trump’s agenda,” given that “the people who voted for Trump voted for this agenda.” But others agreed that Vance might have to start looking for a new job. Some said he shouldn’t even “waste time running for president” after the Trump administration’s military operations in Iran.
