JD Vance Says Charlie Kirk’s Death Prompted Usha To Change Her Mind About Having Another Baby

Previously, when Vice President JD Vance talked about welcoming a fourth child with his wife, Usha Vance, he suggested that he had to convince her to have another child, which really rubbed some people the wrong way. He said Usha ultimately decided she wanted to have another child because he’s very “persuasive.” But now, he’s offering a different explanation for the decision: Charlie and Erika Kirk.

In his upcoming book, Communion, JD wrote about how Charlie’s shocking death influenced his wife’s perspective.

According to JD, a conversation with Erika made Usha think about things differently.

While Usha was initially not so sure that she wanted to expand their family, JD wrote that “something changed” after Charlie’s death. “As my wife held Charlie Kirk’s widow on the first day of her terrible sorrow, Erika told Usha between sobs that she regretted having only two kids with Charlie,” he wrote in his book, per RadarOnline.

Erika has said that she “prayed to God” that she was pregnant when her husband died. During a conversation with Megyn Kelly, she revealed that she and Charlie had planned on having four children together. “Now when I see young couples, I tell them, ‘Please, like don’t put it off,’ especially if you’re a young woman, don’t put it off,” she said.

JD said he has talked to Usha about having another child “for years.”

“For years, I had asked Usha to have another baby, and for years she had told me she was done—especially now that public service had elevated us into the national spotlight,” he wrote. He noticed that Usha’s perspective shifted not long after Charlie’s death.

“But something changed for Usha, and not long after we buried my friend, she became pregnant with our fourth child, a boy,” he added.

This differs from how he spoke about Usha’s pregnancy in the past. Previously, when JD talked about Usha changing her mind, he tried to make a joke about it, and it didn’t really land. “I remember when we decided to run for vice president,” he recalled earlier this year. “I said, ‘Honey, I really want to have a fourth kid.'”

Usha reportedly gave him two choices: “Well, you can become vice president, or you can have a fourth baby.” He then bragged that he “got both” because he’s “persuasive.”

Usha was asked about these comments during an interview.

And although she said that in the past she wasn’t sure she wanted a fourth child, she also “never closed the door on that.”

During her interview with NBC’s Kate Snow, she explained, “People have asked me if we’re going to have a fourth baby, and I’ve never closed the door on that. I grew up in a family of two, and I thought that was a great number. And then I had two kids, and I thought — I didn’t feel quite done, right? So I really wanted to have a third child.”

While her family “did feel very complete” with three children, she later became “more and more excited about that possibility” of expanding their family. “And so if there was a chance, I should take it,” she said. “I knew that I’d be happy if we only had three kids, and I knew that I’d be happy if we had four. And so here we are.”
