As people speculate about why it’s been weeks since Melania Trump last appeared in public, Jimmy Fallon imagines that her husband remains relatively unfazed. Because Jimmy assumes that President Donald Trump doesn’t see his wife all that often anyway, he recently implied that he probably didn’t notice her absence during public appearances.
The topic came up on the Monday, August 17 episode of Jimmy’s show.
It’s basically been a month since Melania’s last public appearance.
On July 19, she attended the 2026 World Cup final with her husband. She has not joined him at other events since then, leading to speculation about where she is and what she’s actually doing with her time.
Of course, it’s not that the president’s critics don’t understand why Melania might want to keep her distance. And Melania has always had a … unique way of approaching the First Lady role. But still, it’s definitely not typical and has also exacerbated rumors about the state of their marriage.
Jimmy joked about this during his monologue.
He mentioned how Melania did not join the president when he traveled to Long Island for a recent event. That’s obviously not the only event that she has skipped recently.
“People have noticed that she’s been laying low. In fact, she hasn’t been seen in public for 29 days,” Jimmy said on his show. But while others are puzzling over this, the president probably hasn’t noticed anything unusual, Jimmy joked.
“Trump heard and was like, ‘Big deal. I haven’t seen her in private for two years,'” Jimmy added.
“I understand Melania’s taking a step back with everything going on,” he continued. “She’s worried that at any moment, she could be trapped with Trump inside her catering truck.”
Unsurprisingly, Jimmy also brought another person who hasn’t been seen in public in a while into the bit. “All I know is that it’s going to be crazy when we find out she ran off with Mitch McConnell,” Jimmy continued. “…That’s gonna be bizarre.”
Melania truly has been lying low this summer.
The Daily Beast recently published a report about Melania’s light schedule. Through its investigation, the publication found that Melania has only appeared in public 38 times this year. She has seemed particularly uninvolved over the summer.
In June and July, Melania only had a total of five public appearances, two of which were sporting events. She also attended her husband’s controversial Fourth of July celebration, where she joined him on stage as he spoke. She held his hand during the speech but did not really look at her husband, making Trump critics think the affection seemed kind of performative and forced.
Once the speech was over, Melania seemed more distant from her husband, though the president’s supporters argued that the couple might’ve been tired after a long day.
At this point, Melania’s public appearances are so infrequent that it’s almost more surprising and newsworthy when she actually attends an event. People have gotten so used to not seeing her that conspiracy theories about a Melania body double often reemerge when she actually does appear in public. So, maybe Jimmy is right that her husband is used to this too.
