If you live outside of New York, jumping the subway turnstile may seem really risky and even a bit criminal. If you live in the New York City metro area, however, you know just how common the practice is and how many people have done it at one point or another.
Regardless of your perspective on the issue, we can all agree that the story of a would-be fare evader falling to his death is truly sad. A 28-year-old man, who appeared to possibly be intoxicated, made several attempts to jump the turnstile at the Forest Hills-71st Avenue train station in Queens in January 2022. During one jump, he lost his cellphone.
The man's repeated attempts just seemed like they wouldn't work. When he finally managed to get the littlest bit over, he fell in a tragic manner that led to his death.
Surveillance video from the train station shows 28-year-old Christopher De La Cruz attempting to jump over the turnstile a number of times. During one attempt, his phone falls and slides away from him.

On his last attempt, he loses his balance and flips over the turnstile. Authorities say that De La Cruz fell on his head and broke his neck. His body was found at 6:45 a.m. on January 2.
After reviewing the footage, police believe there's no criminality involved in the death. They discourage jumping turnstiles to evade fares but still believe the situation to be tragic.
