Kamala Harris is excited to become the first female vice president. She's excited to make history, and she's excited to get to work. But there is someone else who is pretty pumped about her stepping into the second-highest office in the country, and that's her No. 1 guy: her husband, Doug Emhoff.
If you don't know much about Doug yet, you will soon. But he's already been proving himself as an incredibly supportive husband. He can barely seem to contain just how proud he is of his wife. But he's also thrilled to be making history himself as America's very first second gentleman. It's a role he seems legitimately thrilled to hold.
Kamala sat down with ABC's Robin Roberts on Good Morning America to discuss many important things about the state of the country — and, of course, her main man.
Kamala and her husband seem to have a really strong relationship. When she talks about him, she beams with pride. He definitely does the same when he talks about his wife. And that's a great thing, because a strong foundation will definitely be important as she steps into her new role as vice president — a position that can bring long hours and tons of stress.
During Kamala's Good Morning America interview with Robin Roberts, Doug was a hot topic. Not only is he about to become the first second gentleman, which is groundbreaking enough, he's also genuinely thrilled about his new role. Robin asked Kamala about what it means to the both of them.
Kamala was absolutely beaming when she spoke about him. "He's very excited," she told Robin. She also shared how much he loves being a dad to a girl and talked sweetly about how he has worn his "girl dad" shirt so much, it's practically in pieces. He's definitely a huge supporter of strong women. I mean, he would have to be, being married to Kamala.
While the couple is breaking down barriers, there is still a lot of progress to be made. “He's aware that, you know, we still have so much work to do to remind our children of every gender that they should not be confined by the limited perception that some might have of who they are and what they can be,” Kamala said.
Overall, it seems like America is pretty pumped about getting a second gentleman. It feels like a sign of the times. Not only because it shows a husband supporting his wife by taking on the role, but also because it sets an example for other men to do the same. The importance of letting a strong woman take the spotlight while providing her with encouragement, standing by her side, and being happy to do so is a lesson many men could surely use.
Journalist Jake Tapper seemed fascinated by the new second gentleman's title. In a lighthearted moment last week, he asked Kamala what Doug will be called. She responded by saying that though the proper term is "second gentleman," she will simply call him "honey."
Seeing how supportive Doug has already been has us excited to see more from the future second gentleman. He was a fixture on the campaign trail. When Joe Biden and Kamala won the election, he couldn't contain his joy. On November 7, he tweeted an image of the couple hugging, along with the message "So proud of you."
He also voiced his support for Dr. Jill Biden earlier this week after a sexist editorial published in The Wall Street Journal suggested she should drop her "Dr." title. "Dr. Biden earned her degrees through hard work and pure grit," he wrote. "She is an inspiration to me, to her students, and to Americans across this country. This story would never have been written about a man."
Doug's support for his wife is clear. But it's wonderful to see that he has a habit of supporting women. Having a feminist as the first-ever second gentleman seems very fitting indeed. Already, Doug is proving that he knows exactly how to stand by his woman. To the rest of us, it makes him appear strong, confident, and undeniably proud.
Husbands, men, boys: Take note.
