Kate Winslet Says Iconic ‘Titanic’ Kiss Scene Was Actually ‘A Nightmare’ & Describes Why

Kate Winslet recently reacted to the "I’m flying" scene in Titanic (the one where she kisses Leonardo DiCaprio) and her reaction serves as a reminder of the dramatic difference between expectations vs. reality. With Vanity Fair, Kate reacted to scenes that she starred in, including the iconic Titanic scene, which was actually "such a mess," she revealed. While Kate noted that "every young girl in the world wanted to be kissed by Leonardo DiCaprio," she explained that the scene was actually "a nightmare."

"Leo couldn’t stop laughing, and we had to reshoot this about four times," Kate admitted.

But it wasn't Leo's fault. Kate explained that the film's director, James Cameron, "wanted a very specific light for this, obviously," but this was challenging to achieve. Additionally, because they were on a section of the ship that the hair and makeup team couldn't access, Kate and Leo ran into a lot of makeup issues.

"What you wouldn't know, because Leo looks completely natural, but he had to lay on sun beds, there's a lot of fake tan makeup going on," Kate told Vanity Fair. She explained that she had makeup hidden in her blouse to redo their makeup between takes.

These are not the only reasons why the scene was not quite as romantic as it looks. As she watched the scene, Kate noted that she "kept bumping [her] knees on that third railing." She also laughed at how the scene "goes on and on and on."

"My God, he’s quite the romancer, isn’t he? No wonder every young girl in the world wanted to be kissed by Leonardo DiCaprio," she joked. "It was not all it’s cracked up to be."

The scene was actually messy because they were "covered in each other's makeup."

"We kept doing this kiss, and I’ve got a lot of pale makeup on and I would have to do our makeup checks — on both of us, between takes — and I would end up looking as though I’d been sucking a caramel chocolate bar after each take because his makeup would come off on me," she revealed.
