These 7 Inspiring Films Featuring Hispanic Leads Are Must-Sees For Every Kid

One of the most amazing things about film is that it has the power to teach us so much about different walks of life. If we stick to watching movies that represent only certain cultures, ideas, and identities, then we really do ourselves a disservice.

In recent years, there have been more American-made movies than ever featuring Hispanic leads. It's a pretty cool thing to see, because while there used to be only a handful of stars in the US with Hispanic heritage, we're seeing more and more Hispanic actors take on starring roles.

When it comes to movies that the whole family can enjoy, there are more than a few.

Here are seven must-watch movies featuring Hispanic leads that kids can enjoy.

1. 'Real Women Have Curves'

Real Women Have Curves is an inspiring story starring America Ferrera. It was released back in 2002 as more of an indie flick but ended up with rave reviews, catapulting America into the spotlight. The actress plays Ana García, a young girl living in East Los Angeles. Ana is brilliant, but she knows her family can't afford to send her to college. It's a deeply moving film about the struggles of her Latina family that shines a light on so many issues Latina youth in the US routinely face.

2. 'In the Heights'

In the Heights is the must-see 2021 film that families have been loving since its release. The movie was actually originally a Broadway musical that was adapted for the big screen. But don't worry! There's still tons of singing and dancing. It stars Anthony Ramos as a New York City bodega owner who is dreaming about a different life. It's fun and illuminating, and it will have you singing the songs for weeks.

3. 'Coco'

Coco is an incredible animated movie that kids of any age will absolutely love. The songs are gorgeous, and the story line is totally unique and beautiful. It's the story of a young boy named Miguel, played by Anthony Gonzalez, who is seeking to find out about his family's painful past. It's about love and healing, and it teaches us about Mexican culture.

4. 'McFarland, USA'

This Disney film is a must-watch for so many reasons — but most importantly because it's a true and super-inspiring story. It's based on the newly established track team at McFarland High School in McFarland, California, where the predominantly Latino kids succeed against the odds and become famous. Carlos Pratts stars in the film opposite Kevin Costner.

5. 'The Book of Life'

The Book of Life is another super-cute animated film that's a hilarious watch for kids and adults alike. It stars Diego Luna as the voice of Manolo, a man who is trying to face his worst fears. The Day of the Dead is a big theme in the film, which makes it super educational about the Mexican holiday. This one is for all ages.

6. 'Dora and the Lost City of Gold'

All kids pretty much go through a Dora phase. But the live-action film about 16-year-old Dora is for just about anyone. The film stars Isabela Merced as Dora and is highly watchable (even for parents!). Dora is basically a superhero in the film, which is something we hadn't yet seen from a Hispanic lead, making it super special and groundbreaking.

7. 'Underdogs'

Underdogs is a really unique Argentinian film about foosball. It's totally unique because, for one, who has ever heard of a film about foosball? But it also smashed box office records in Argentina! It features Hispanic actor Eugenio Derbez, who voices the part of Rico in the American version of the film.
