Madonna’s Times Square Pride Concert Stunt Sparks Safety Concerns And Ageism Debate Online

Madonna surprised fans with a pop-up concert in New York City’s Times Square, and people are still talking about whether she should be doing so much. On social media, a risky stunt she performed has sparked a debate. Much of the discourse centers on her age and how, in some people’s opinions, she should maybe hold back from dangling her leg over an elevated barricade. While a decent number of fans were genuinely worried for her safety, some critics called Madonna out for acting “odd” and “embarrassing.”

Say what you will about Madonna, but she certainly knows how to get people’s attention.

The “Like a Virgin” singer partnered with Grindr and previewed her upcoming album.

The 67-year-old’s upcoming album, Confessions II, is set to come out at the beginning of July. During the surprise performance, she sang some of her well-known hits in addition to some new songs off her upcoming album. At one point during the surprise pop-up concert, she also shook the barricade in front of her a bit, seemingly testing its sturdiness.

Then, she swung one leg over it, scaring some fans in the audience and on social media. A video of the stunt has been circulating on X, where one commenter wrote that they “saw this live and remember the audible gasp.”

“Gosh, she scared me there!” someone else wrote. Some fans were worried that something would go horribly wrong during the performance. “I can’t lie, I gasped when she did that,” one of them commented. “She was so wobbly on her feet I thought for sure she’d fall over the side.” And another commenter added, “I don’t get the leg over thing…good thing she didn’t get stuck or it didn’t break….”

There were a lot of comments about Madonna’s age.

Apparently, a lot of critics think Madonna is “too old” to be performing like this. Some people even said she should just sit down instead of doing dangerous stunts like this one. “We’re a little too close to 70 for all that!” someone commented. “I don’t think so!”

“I’m older too and have better sense..” another critic added. The clip also garnered a lot of judgmental comments like, “get granny back to the nursing home.”

But some fans clearly saw it differently. One person noted that it’s actually “impressive” (and not embarrassing) that Madonna can still perform like this. “this is incredibly impressive considering she’s almost 70,” they wrote. Plus, another commenter questioned what the haters think Madonna should be doing with her time. “People in the comments expect her to lay on the bed all day and do nothing or smth?” they said. “That would be boring.”

And although the stunt looked kind of scary, some fans noticed she was careful about it.

After all, she clearly tried to test the barricade’s stability before swinging her leg over it. “She slyly made sure that glass was firm before she did any stunts,” someone wrote in her defense. “My girl’s a performer, not reckless.”

Plus, some longtime Madonna fans questioned why people were so weirded out by the performance. Madonna has been known for her eccentric behavior and provocative performances for years now. Given her reputation, the stunt didn’t seem all that shocking to some of her fans. “All people here hating her (because) of her age, looks, & antics, (you) better keep in mind that this is Madonna,” one person pointed out in the comments.
