Last month, it was reported that Malcolm-Jamal Warner’s widow, Tenisha Warner, had filed a lawsuit against his mother, Pamela Warner. Now, it seems that Tenisha’s situation has worsened, as a good friend has launched a GoFundMe fundraiser to help support her.
Malcolm died in an accidental drowning at the age of 54 and was survived by his wife and daughter, who was 8 years old at the time of his death. The tragedy occurred during a family vacation in Costa Rica in July 2025. In her court documents, Tenisha claimed that she is entitled to money from the family trust.
Tenisha’s friend wrote that she “has stretched every resource she has.”
The friend, Destiny, said that she’s been Tenisha’s “closest friend for 19 years.” Knowing that Tenisha “would never ask for this kind of support herself,” Destiny launched the GoFundMe campaign on her behalf.
Destiny said, “I have watched Tenisha spend this year grieving the love of her life while honoring the promise they made to each other, to homeschool their nine-year-old daughter. Every single day she shows up for her child as though her own world had not fallen apart, and still makes sure breakfast is on the table.”
In addition to losing her husband, Tenisha returned to her home and found that it had been affected by “unexpected flooding.”
“She is rebuilding not only her life without him, but the very home they created together,” Destiny added.
She also mentioned Malcom’s estate.
Tenisha is dealing with so many things in addition the profound grief that comes with losing a loved one. Destiny explained, “Every room holds their memories, with no space to truly mourn, because the demands have never paused: legal matters that began within weeks of Malcolm’s passing, financial weight carried alone, a house to put back together, and their daughter to care for every single day.”
According to her, Tenisha “has stretched every resource she has and borrowed from people who love her just to keep one foot in front of the other.”
She noted that fans might assume the family had money due to Malcolm’s career, but the situation is more complicated than that. Tenisha “does not have the financial cushion people might assume,” especially because she had “stepped back from her own career” to focus on their family prior to Malcolm’s death.
“Malcolm had worked with his attorneys to update his estate plan to provide for his wife and daughter, but he passed away before he could sign it,” Destiny noted. “They thought they had time.”
She said she doesn’t necessarily want anyone “to take sides in a family matter.”
Instead, she launched the fundraiser to “provide security for Tenisha and her daughter as they work toward resolving Malcolm’s affairs.”
Destiny added, “I am not asking anyone to take sides in a family matter that was never meant to be public. I am asking you to stand with a grieving wife and mother, and her young daughter, so they don’t lose what Malcolm always intended to provide for them.”
In her court documents filed in July, Tenisha asserted that her mother-in-law owes her $1.2 million from the Warner Family Trust, based on what Malcolm allegedly promised in their prenuptial agreement.
