Cathy was an 80-year-old woman with a gentle spirit who lived with her older son, David. They lived in a house that kept the rain and snow out, but it was beginning to get quite rundown simply due to age and the climate.
Cathy’s world completely changed when she was diagnosed with macular degeneration, which robbed her of her full eyesight. She began to be increasingly dependent on her son and even though he loved his mother dearly, he also worked full time and caretaking can certainly take its toll.
Their house had become a symbol of their hardships. The walls were thinning and the insulation was so poor that during the harsh winter months, the temperature was always frosty.
One winter night, Cathy and David were having a quiet moment by the fire when David asked his mother if something was bothering her. She told him that she was feeling defeated because reading had always been a favorite pastime and since her vision loss, she was experiencing more and more trouble when she tried to pick up a book and make out the words on the page.
Cathy received word from her physician that she could get a procedure that would help slow down the vision loss in her left eye. It was costly, but David was determined to get his mom this treatment to help improve her quality of life.

On the day of the eye procedure, the roads were completely covered in snow. David did his best to dig the car out and clear the driveway because he was determined to get his mom to her appointment. They were able to drive most of the way to the clinic, but as they got closer, they saw that there was no safe way to enter the parking lot.
