In the middle of many people noticing Melania Trump's absence on the campaign trail, sources now allege that Melania renegotiated her prenuptial agreement with former President Donald Trump. Earlier in September, a source told People that Melania viewed Donald's legal problems as his, not hers.
The former first lady has reportedly been doing her own thing for most of the summer and focusing on taking care of her son. A new report from Page Six suggests that Melania is starting to see how her husband's legal problems could also become her problem.
Sources told Page Six that Melania has renegotiated her prenup with Donald, and the timing of it is interesting for a couple of reasons. Donald is hoping to secure his second term in office, and he is also dealing with legal battles that might've influenced Melania's decision. “This agreement was necessary because of the current legal battles … [Donald] has suffered," the source told Page Six. "[Donald] remains very rich, but with mounting legal bills and judgments."
The source added that the prenup provides more security for Melania and her son, Barron, 17, in the event that Melania ends her marriage. It seems a bit suspicious that she would renegotiate the prenup now, at a time when she has been living her life fairly separate from her husband. But sources told Insider that the renegotiation might have nothing to do with how the couple's relationship is going.
According to attorneys that Insider spoke to, renegotiating a prenup is also common for couples that are experiencing financial issues, especially for people with a lot of money. "The spouse who is having financial difficulties, or facing financial difficulties, may want to transfer assets out of his or her name," said Bill Beslow, a divorce lawyer who spoke with Insider.
Another source told the publication that Melania may just want some extra security given the current circumstances. A source told Page Six that "Melania is most concerned about maintaining and increasing a substantial trust for their son, Barron."
More from LittleThings: People Are Noticing That Melania Seems To Be Distancing Herself From Donald Trump
A source told Page Six that this all has been happening "quietly" over the past year. The source added that it's not the first time Melania has done this. Washington Post writer Mary Jordan alleged that Melania also renegotiated her prenup in 2017 in the book, The Art of Her Deal: The Untold Story of Melania Trump. Melania's former spokesperson said the book "belongs in the fiction genre." Whether or not Melania actually renegotiated her prenup, sources told Insider that it would be a smart move for the former first lady.
