In a world filled with diverse expressions of love and commitment, the human spirit’s capacity to transcend norms and expectations continues to astound. In a remarkable and unprecedented turn of events, a mayor of a small town in Mexico married an caiman in a colorful and beautiful ceremony.
Victor Hugo Sosa is the mayor of San Pedro Huamelula, which is in the southern Mexican state of Oaxaca. Recently, the world has heard about Victor’s nuptials to a 7-year-old caiman, which is similar to an alligator, who he calls “princess girl” or “little princess.”
This type of ceremony is nothing new to this town, it is actually a centuries-old ancestral ritual that is believed to bring good luck. This ceremony has been happening regularly for 230 years. The reason behind this annual event is not only to bring luck, but it’s to celebrate a truce between the indigenous Chontal and Huave.
The ceremony is also considered a prayer requesting nature’s bounty. You can see tones of Catholic spirituality as the alligator is dressed up in a white wedding dress, and other colorful garments throughout the day and night. The town also believes that the reptile is a deity representing Mother Earth.
According to Sky News, before the ceremony, the caiman is carried from house to house so everyone can hold her and dance. I’m not sure if I would take that challenge but Little Princess seems to be used to it! After they dress her in her beautiful white gown, she is taken to the town hall for the big wedding.

After the wedding, there is dancing and celebration. In the video, you can see Victor carrying his new bride through a large crowd gathered around them. He slowly leans down several times to give Little Princess a kiss on her head. Fortunately for Victor, Little Princess’s mouth is tied shut, just to make sure she doesn’t snap at her new husband.
Based on the video, Victor and Little Princess seem to be a happy couple. Hopefully, this marriage doesn’t end in divorce, or the bride might actually snap at her new husband!
